My guess is that a second package had it's tracking number entered manually, at another sort and distribution facility incorrectly.

This caused the original package to backroute as the other package had been given the wrong track number which is used to direct it through the stream.

As a result, your package was being routed via the incorrectly entered parcel. Sooner or later someone at another SD facility will wonder why something bound for Germantown ended up on a plane bound for somewhere else.

FedEX does this all the time, and from time to time USPS has done this to me or does I have placed, but my favorite was when I use to work the 998 Express Mail run on Sundays when I was a mailman.

I like when the Express Mail from Florida and points south were sent up to JFK, bypassing BWI a major Express Mail hub, then be sent to Chicago to go back to BWI on a Sunday. For some reason we had no planes, trucks or NE Corridor trains (We still had Amtrak mail on Sundays back then) We only had JFK to Philly, the Philly to DC, but there is no DC to Frederick on Express. (Local 1st class routed through Suburban)

So mail to BWI from JFK had to go by way of O'Hare. From BWI, it would go to Frederick Tilco regional sorting that served westerm MD and WV, except on Sundays which processed local mail only, no express. Since Frederick Tilco does not receive Express Mail on Sunday, it goes to Hagerstown from BWI, being trucked from HGR to FDK then to Frederick MPO to be delivered.

The part I hated was when I;'d take route 998-3 western hub, which would send me as far west as Hagerstown where the damn express mail jsut came from. HGR si not a regional distribution, nor is it an MPO so they had no 998 service on weekends.

I hate working with package delivery.

Usually, a package wouldn't be returned to the shipper as a result of a bad-route unless it was HEAVILY damaged.

Time to swap USPS hat for my UPS hat (another hell job from my past)

This is why I think it is a double scan: There's no arrival scan what so ever on the package after it went out for delivery in G-burg. Even if it was not delivered, it has to have an arrival scan. Out for Delivery (OFD) means that the router driver scanned that he arrived the package and it is in his truck.

Even if it is the wrong truck, and it goes back to G-burg, it has to be scanned to go out somewhere. It still needs an ARS (Arrival Scan) But there is on ARS, nor is there a departure scan (DPS) saying it even left G-burg, there is no ARS in Georgia either for it, so it is missing three scans. The OFD for Georgia would not even take under UPS if there is an "open" OFD scan on the package from G-burg.

Yes, I have noticed the missing scans, their absence is a mystery for a me. My theory was that the package dropped from the conveyor belt into another truck bound to Georgia after being scanned and was discovered there next morning.

One other curious thing is that my street name is not so common, just a few streets named like that all over the whole US, but coincidentally, there is the same house number and the same street name just a few miles from Doraville, GA. Could be the routing software glitch.

Well, if your package fell off the belt it would just land on the floor. Usually drivers manually offload them from the belt as they go by. There's no real sense of automation. At the PO, they did not even have a belt, they just chucked them in to the route bins. Now, that is an interesting idea about the scanner misrouting the package by street address, but addresses are read by 2D bar-codes. Routing is though hub-spoke via zip codes to route per SD centers. Now, the reason why I suggested a manual track number is entry is becasue I had done that once or twice at UPS with the exact same results. I misread an "O" for a "0" and it gummed up both packages.
